Cozaar Side Effect Information in Questions
Blood Pressure - Inderal LA (Propranolol generic) and Cozaar good combination? I take Inderal long acting 80 mg 1 time per day. My BP still runs a little high. My cardiologist prescribed Cozaar 50 mg in addition. Just wondering if anyone taking Inderal or propranolol (generic for Inderal) has taken this combo and how they did? Any side effects?

Menthoids replied: "Cozaar is an angiotensin II receptor antagonist. What ?? This means it stops you making stuff that constricts blood vessels, hence lowering BP. The Inderal (LA - Long Acting) is a Beta Blocker, which helps stop the 'go harder' signals from your body to your heart, also lowering BP. It is often useful to use more than 1 BP lowering (antihypertensive) medication to get that old BP down where you want it. This is a very safe combo and there are no extra side effects from taking the medications individually. It is always a good idea when starting a new BP med to get regular BP checks to get the doseage right for you, everyone responds differently, and it depends why the BP is high too. Hope this helps."

Blood Pressure Medication - Side Effects? I'm a 61 year old male with high BP ( It's a family thing) and was first detected some 20 years ago. Have been on the various medications over the years and was on the usual combination of beta blocker, ACE and diuretic for the longest time with very little problems. When beta blockers became the bad boys about a year ago I changed to Cozaar Comp and found that I became dizzy when mounting stairs or jumping out of the car - classic hypotension episodes to my mind. Told GP who changed me to Losec with the same results, if not worse. Tried Cozaar again taking morning and evening instead of one a day but same problem if not worse. As an experiment stopped taking medication and as expected BP risen to unacceptable levels 165/115 but no problems. Any one experienced same? any ideas? It's really unpleasant not being able to run after a ball with my Grandson for fear of a dizzy attack and they can be severe. Otherwise no health problems and not diabetic.

Stevie B replied: "One of the side effects of not taking medication is, well, death. Maybe not tomorrow, or the next day, but sometime in the future and before it should. So keep taking em, and lose some weight - I can see from here that you are carrying a few too many pounds. Extra weight put strain on the heart, but you know all about that don't you, so the medication is the lesser of two evils. Good Luck!"

gizzaclue replied: "You obviously have a long history of hypertension....me too. Do not adjust your medication yourself, let the doctor do that. I'd be inclined to return to your GP and let him know your symptoms. There are plenty of medicines available for this condition, perhaps this combination of drugs doesn't suit you. Also, I've been on beta blockers for over 20 years and have not been advised to stop them. If, on the rare occasion I do forget to take it my symptoms are much worse!! Just a thought. Hope things improve."

raymond m replied: "well, high blood pressure is nothing to play with and if you are experiencing dizziness it's because of the side effects of the the medication. well, as of you not being able to run with you grandson, i get a feeling at 61 you wasn't doing all that much running in the first place. hahahaha. stick to your meds and if you have any more question about the side effects of your medication or what they do. go to. and if doesn't help you, consult your doctor and let him or her know exactly what is going on with you. that's my opinion"

I need help quick, diabetic with high blood pressure, what medication? I am an insulin dependent diabetic, have high blood pressure. Have been taking Tenormin for a long time & now my dr. has added Cozaar 50 mg. a month ago. It is not working, blood pressure tonight was 168/65. Having all kinds of bad side effects, headache, diarrhea, & shaky. I'm going to see my dr. tomorrow, give me some names of medications anyone takes that really works.

Tin S replied: "I take Enalapril Meleate 5 mg. twice a day. Works for me. But maybe not for your doctor. He will want you on some expensive drug. So he and drug store can reap the profits. Costs me under 20 cents a day. Cozaar may effect your glucose levels...> How is your exercise program going????"

I need Seniors feedback? I have been having flu-like symptoms for 2 weeks now and it gets hard to breath sometimes. I thought it was from the Cozaar that I was started on and the main side effect is "Respiratory Infection". I never get the Flu and never take a shot. So now I'm not sure if it's a side effect or actually the flu. I didn't think I was contagious cause I haven't had a temp. I don't want to spread it around if it's actually the Flu. Please tell me your recent flu symptoms and the outcome. I'm due for general anesthetic for eye surgery and I can't get it if I have the Flu.???

slk29406 replied: "If you don't have a fever, you are not contagious. It might be a side effect, I would call your doctor prior to surgery however AS with any surgery, anesthesia with a respiratory problem is not recommended, be safe!"

donya replied: "It's horrible when you have breathing difficulties and I'm sorry to hear you aren't felling well. It's as slk said, no fever is a good sign but let your doctor know . I have had the worst summer in years for allergies. The air quality seems to be getting worse every year . take care and BtW I like your picture."

justme replied: "You must see you Doctor immediately, reactions pills (I assume it is a pill,), anyway, it is some kind of medication. It can be a sign of an allergy,. Allergies can affect our breathing, or even have an effect our your heart. Not permanently, so don't worry. I haven't had any flu recently, because I don't get flu vaccinations anymore. But their was an awful flue going round Australia, and with air travel, the world is small today. You can't have any surgery until it clears up. And you get well."

BrooklynInMyBones replied: "Breathing problems could mean pneumonia, which often follows flu. Get to a doctor asap! It could be dangerous."

goldwing replied: "There is a very real flu going around, symptoms are upset stomach for a period, then congestion...and those who I know had/have it are having troubles as you describe. One of my employees ended up with pneumonia, so please be very careful here. I would call the doc and get on Erythromyacin ASAP. (will stop pneumonia in its tracks). I would delay the eye surgery until you are completely well...no sense in taking any chances. Good luck, Goldwing"

autumlovr replied: "If you're having "breathing problems", you definitely need to contact your doctor. This is not something you want to be experiencing before anesthetic or eye surgery. Things could go real wrong. Flu like symptoms can be a side effect and you doctor will probably remove you from the med immediately. These are the symptoms they're talking about that you need to re-connect with your doctor about. Not good."

Southern Comfort replied: "Mountain Gal, I agree with everyones advice-see your Dr. asap. Forego the surgery and reschedule it when you are better. I have been sick for the 9th day today with upper respiratory, headache, earache, sore throat, sinus problems. I hope you find out whether it is the medicene or something similiar to what I am undergoing. Be Blessed!"

makeitright replied: "I believe you need to see your doctor. You do not have to run a temperature to have an infection necessarily. The flu is hitting early this year. You are wise to postpone your surgery. See your doctor and get them to run a CBC to determine what your white count is. You sound like you have some sort of infection. If you are unable to breathe well, the doctor can give you an inhaler as well. Bless your heart. Your original cough was a side effect from Cozaar, but let the doctor know all the other stuff you are going through. When I had shoulder surgery, while I was in the holding room, my orthopedic surgeon informed me I had a high white count and he seemed angry. They ran it again and it was okay. So, don't worry. They will not do your surgery if you have a high white count. Blessings for your good health."

FL Girl replied: "The best thing for you to do is consult a physician. You don't know what you might have, and seniors in particular shouldn't fool around being sick."

Shari replied: "For a few weeks, I had what I thought was a respiratory infection. Then before shaking it, I started having stomach flu symptoms. Chills, and getting warm, and chills again. The whole nine yards of stomach trouble, except for vomiting. I have had minor bouts of nausea. I also have been off balance and very very tired. So it's been mandatory to nap almost daily or I fall asleep at the computer. The respiratory probs. kicked in again yesterday, and I've had to use my inhalers and make sure I'm using oxygen during the day. I have used Cozaar but I believe I take something else now. They tend to perscribe generics now, so I don't have any name brands. This flu, is becoming rampant in our town. I think I caught it from medical staff at the clinic I go to. As I was told that there were 7 staff members out, the other day when I was in. Now our grandson has it, and he was exposed to me. If it weren't for the stomach ills, I'd think it was just a bad respir- atory infection. My asthma will flare up now and then and it could have, from my shortness of breath. They send me home if I'm not running a fever. As all viruses have to just run their course. Try taking your temp to see if you are running a low grade fever. Use your meds as you need them. Even taking an ibuprophen to use as an anti inflamatory. Then if you still don't feel better, do see your doctor, for a possible blood test. If you have an infection it will show up there. I've been sick for over a month. Just when I think I am getting over it, I get a set back. Good luck on finding out where your problem lays."

joan replied: "An infection is an illness, not a side effect regardless of whether or not you are more susceptible to it because of medication. Suggest you see your doctor to see if it needs treatment and if you can still have the eye surgery. You can have the flu and not have an abnormal temperature yet still be contagious."

What do you do when?.....? you are prescribed a med that makes you sicker than the illness it was supposed to cure? I was put on Cozaar by my Dr. for high B/P. I always look in my drug book for side effects and the main one was upper respiratory infection. I ignored that cause I really needed the med. Since starting the med, I have had 4 bouts of severe lung infection and I'm on my 5th now, which is like a horrible flu. I healed myself thru natural therapies. I told my doctor all this and refused to continue the drug, only to have her get very upset because I went off the drug. (I also control my own B/P thru natural means, but it is a little high now.) I really need some of your opinions, I'm at my wits end on how to handle doctors. Over age 21 answers only please!

Wes's Granny replied: "My doctor put me on Cozaar for HBP a while back. I liked to coughed myself to death. I had to stop taking that crap. About three days after I stopped, the cough stopped but my BP was high and I did need a med. I switched to Hyzaar 50-12.5. My BP came down and all the crappy symptoms you spoke of went away. Try that one. It is a much better drug than Cozaar."

foxfyre replied: "First don't stop taking it suddenly. Blood pressure meds and certain other meds can have serious complications if you stop taking them suddenly. Second talk to your doctor about possible alternative meds. Honestly I don't know your history or drug allergies etc to be able to be more specific about certain drugs. There are alot of BP meds out there, but know this usually the stronger the med the worse the side effects, in my experience. Also talk to her about the infections and what you can do prevent them or minimize them. Some meds do have horrible side effects, some stay but some gradually go away while you take the med. I was on an antisezuire med that made me very tired. I could not stay awake for more than an hour or two. After about a month I was able to function somewhat normally and after six months I was completely normal. Ask questions. And be proactive with your doctor. Have her explain why this med over other BP meds, she may feel that the side effects are less harmful than the med. You don't know till you have a serious talk with her. If she does not explain it to you enough, go get another opinion. See what someone else has to say. Good Luck"

Shan replied: "Yup Doctors don't know everything. They just prescribe what they are taught to prescribe. And as quickly as possible.Do keep an eye on your BP though as the side effects of that can be worse than a U.R.I.!"

luvspbr2 replied: "I had a problem with cholesterol (at 225) meds. I wasn't given any other suggestions on lowering it, just told to take the pill-40mg. I got very sick (not like my reg migraines) and one day was violently vomiting, slurred speech, etc. and thought I was having a stroke. My husband remembered this started when I went on the meds. I stopped them immediately (I was on them about a wk). I went back to the dr at my 6 wk appt and my cholesterol was 129. I'm not sure the first test was accurate. My dr didn't like that I wouldn't take the meds, but I refused. I also use 'natural' treatments now for various problems. I took a pharmacy tech class a couple yrs ago and realized how 'over medicated' we really our. Meds are wonderful and needed for many aliments, but they are way over prescribed. Much of it is a $ thing. I'm glad you are finding natural means to help you. You know your body better than anyone else-take care of it. I just wanted you to know you aren't alone in this."

Denie replied: "Just an added warning about something else. I was taking one of the statins for cholesteral (I think it was lovastatin)...My ch. was great...but I noticed one day when driving..all of a sudden I didn't know where I was. It scared me SO BAD !! I thought I was coming down with alzheimers . Somehow..by a miracle , I guess..I happened upon a site where other people who had taken it had the same side effect. One man was in his yard and didn't know where he was. The dr. immediately changed my pres. to something else and I haven't had any more incidents like that since. (Thank goodness for people who reported their side effects on the blog...or whatever it was !!) Hope I've helped somebody by telling this. ALWAYS check out side effects..and possible side effects..of ANY medication a dr. gives you. Thanks for warning me about Cozaar. I don't take it, but might know somebody who does in the future (or the dr. might try to prescribe it for me)"

fuzzykitty replied: "Find yourself another doctor, I'm not sure what cozaar is , but I did have a post nasal drip type problem with Prinival a few years back and also a arthritic pain with Hytrin which they treated with Motrin 800. and then pain in my stomach they were going to treat with some expensive med, It was there I decided that the Dr, was treating side effects and changed doctor's . You handle them by telling them what is happening and if they don't take you off the med.then fire them,"

Merl replied: "If the doctor won't switch you to something that you body can tolerate, switch doctors. Then explain the trouble you have had when you take Cozaar. I am fortunate. When I asked my doctor to switch my HB meds, he gave me a 30 day supply to see if I would have any side effects with the new med. After 30 days I didn't have any side effects, I called his office and they called my pharmacy with my new drug prescription. Good luck!!"

jennyann 4 replied: "I am having the same problem with a High Blood Pressure and I have an appt tomorrow with a new dr...Good Luck."

plum_eccentric replied: "You should have continued the medication until the Doctor changed it. You should have told him you couldn't take the Cozaar. He isn't perfect. He will work with you until he gets it figured out !!!! Don't mess with treating it yourself. My husband ended up with double vision and I don't mean side by side. I mean up and down !!!! He didn't listen to the Doctor !!!! Everyone thought he had a stroke !!! Even him !!! He didn't thank goodness !!!!!"

sashali replied: "First of all, change doctors. Any doctor who gets angry when a patient has severe side effects and stops the medication has control issues and therefore does not have the patient's care first and foremost in their plan. I am a nurse and I refuse to put up with any doctor who does not respect me as a patient or respect my needs. You have rights and many more choices than cozaar. See this website below."

Cranky replied: "I did myself the greatest favor, I found a doctor who believes in Complementary And Alternative Medications (CAM). They're around and getting more popular every day. Something you might try, a Chinese herbalist. There are some good ones. Or a Naturopath. I don't like modern medicine and make no bones about it. Oh, did I really say "bones"?"

goldwing replied: "YOU have to take responsiblity for your treatments...If I do not like a med or its side effects, I talk to my doc, get alternatives, and start from there. It sounds as if you have a not so hot doctor. To suffer dangerous lung infections is playing Russian Roulette...don't let any doctor tell you what to do...we are often better at diagnosis than they are. Often, we survive in spite of the treatment, and this sounds the case in your treatment. I have had no reactions to Atenanol and Lisinopril used together, keeps my mildly high BP fully under control. I would consider changing doctors also..this one seems to be too much influenced by the pharmacy companies, and not nearly as concerned with your health! Good luck and Peace, Goldwing"

when2y4 replied: "There are quite a few meds nowadays for hi BP. If one disagrees with you, tell the Doctor. Another one may be better for you. If your BP is high, you may need to be on 3,4, or 5 meds. Years ago there were no good meds to treat BP. People would just die. High BP is very sneaky. You have zero symptoms from it until late when a lot of damage has been done. You have to have a give and take with your doctor for him or her to figure out the best course of treatment. Often there is only one treatment. The one who knows this is your doctor. Remember, your doctor is working for you and wants the best for you, unless he is an HMO doc or a NHS doc. Then he is working for the company. Then they may have a tendency to shade a bit."

~Shortstuff~ replied: "Find another doctor who cares about you. There are so many other BP meds on the market that won't make you ill. (Teveten & Tenormin) It's of the utmost importance that you get on a BP medication right away for your health's sake."

hilbamabush replied: "Some thing really needs to be done..Three months ago a doctor at urgent care gave me a prescription for a bladder infection, please all never"take" this; Nitrofurantoin-macro /generic for macrobid. Horrible stuff, made me deathly sick after 1 capsule. I missed one side effect, possible to cause a FATAL lung ailment, I truly believe the drug companys who put drugs like this on the market should lose their drug licence and their Cos jailed."

makeitright replied: "Your doctor should have told you of the side effects you experienced. There are a few drugs for hypertension that do make you cough a lot and the good physicians will give you one to take it's place. Since you have a drug book, you could check on what you feel might work best for you. If you plan on treating your hypertension yourself, avoid foods with high sodium content. Take a natural diuretic in the form of tea products to eliminate any fluid. I can imagine your bp is a little high right now, you are probably very angry and I would be as well. If you are unhappy with your doctor, find one you feel you can talk with; specifically, one who will talk with you and not AT you. (that irritates me) It would be difficult for a doctor to treat you, though, if you are treating yourself because some homeopathic treatments can actually interfere with prescribed medications, so be sure and let them know what you are taking. I really did not know that physicians are still using Cozaar because of the severity to the respiratory tract. If you see another physician, be sure and let them know of your allergy to Cozaar (losartan) Atenolol in combination with chlorthalidone (known as Tenoretic) is a very good drug, that many patients respond to well. It has the added diuretic you may need. Always let the physician know of any allergies. I am allergic to sulfa and there are some really good drugs I am unable to take because they contain sulfa. Best wishes and good health to you. You are not alone in the fight for a good physician. PS. Just a heads up. Hyzaar with hydrochlorothiazide (diuretic) is Losartan so, avoid that one."

ndnquah replied: "Remember, Dr.'s make a living telling you to take meds and ""come back if that doesn't work we'll try something else"! They made me cough too. Diet and exercise will curb your blood pressure. Of course, unless you're like me and don't do it!! Walking really brings your pressure down!"

Any side effects?

ujagar s replied: "I too Inderal LA about 2 year ago. It is not meant for B.P. control, but for removing anxiety before an important meetng or assignmentl like an interview or making a presentation before others. Please check up with doctor again. It seems he has prescribed Cozaar for B.P. control."

rosieC replied: "-- Not all blood-pressure drugs are alike. An exciting new study shows that Cozaar reduces the risk of stroke, heart attack, and death in seriously ill heart patients. And that's not all: the drug also cuts the risk of diabetes in heart patients. For heart patients who already have diabetes, the drug lowers the risk of death. Treatment with Cozaar reduced the risk of death from stroke by one-fourth Studies found that patients with coronary artery disease might benefit from taking both Cozaar and a beta-blocker. The combination of Cozaar and a beta-blocker has been tested and results are promising. Cozaar is a type of drug known as an angiotensin receptor blocker or ARB. It is expected to show the same superiority to other beta-blockers -- Betapace, Blocadren, Brevibloc, Corgard, Inderal, Sectral, Toprol, and Zebeta. It's not yet known whether other ARBs -- Atacand, Avapro, Diovan, Micardis, and Teveten -- will work as well. However, an editorial in TheLancet suggests that it is reasonable to expect that they. Most of the side effects from Inderal is insomnia and erectile dysfunction."
